History

Ever since the inception of the CH. S. D. St. Theresa’s College for Women at Eluru, West Godavari District in the year 1953, and Economics has been one of the subjects prescribed for Under - Graduate students has gained highest prominence. The department of Economics having a successful record at the Under - Graduate level, it was visualized to offer the course at Post - Graduate level by the management. The stalwarts of the parent department of Economics, Andhra University, Viz, Prof B. Sarveswara Rao, Prof Ramana and Prof. Paradha Saradhi supported the idea and inspired the management to start Economics course at the P.G. level. Thus it had its humble beginning in 1971, with 23 students, due to ceaseless efforts and dedicated services of the then Principal Sr. Josephen and teaching, faculty Dr. Sr. Mary Benjanin, Dr. Mrs. A. Saraswathamma and Sr. M. Graziana. Andhra University has conferred permanent affiliation to P.G. department of Economics in 1991, on account the performance, the efficacy, caliber and dedicated service of the faculty and the institutions. The academic expertise of the faculty of the P. G. Department of Economics was recognized by the management and was awarded “THERSIAN ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD”twice i.e. in the years 2006 & 2010.

Aims and objectives of the department

The Post – Graduate department of Economics works in accordance with the aims and objectives of the college. However, it has devised its own specific objectives, based on the main objectives of the college.

  • To impart value based education, to be committed citizens of the country.
  • To train them to be academically excellent on par with global competence.
  • To develop self – Confidence and positive attitude.
